Maurice et Katia Krafft forment un couple de savants, cinéastes, chercheurs et photographes qui ont fait de la vulcanologie la raison d’être de leur existence. Ensemble, ils ont effectué plus de 800 heures de prise de vues de 128 éruptions volcaniques et ont développé plus de 450 000 pellicules de grande valeur esthétique et scientifique. Voyage à étapes autour du monde, le film rend hommage aux deux protagonistes, depuis la première ascension accomplie par Maurice alors âgé de 7 ans au Stromboli, jusqu’à leur disparition tragique en 1991 sur le Mont Unzen au Japon.
